Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Annual herbs 5–15 dm tall.

Stems: Stems unbranched to sparsely branched, glandular pubescent, the hairs of several lengths, but not spiny.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves compound. Alternate. Blades oblanceolate to rhombic, 2–7.5 cm long, 1–3.8 cm wide; leaflets 3–7. Surfaces glandular-pubescent. Margins serrulate to denticulate. Veins pinnate. Petioles 3–9 cm long.

Flowers: Flowers in elongate racemes, each one subtended by 3–foliate, sessile bracts, in leafy terminal racemes, greatly elongating in fruit. Flowers bisexual (perfect). Calyx of 4 sepals; sepals 2.5–6 mm long. Corolla of 4 petals, petals white, spatulate with a long claw, 1–2 cm long, not covering the stamens in bud, corolla of 4 petals, subequal, distinct, spatulate, entire. Stamens 6, inserted on the gynophore 6–22 mm above the petals; filaments 8–22 mm long; gynophore with a visible scar in fruit, Stamens alternate with the petals; anthers dithecal, opening by longitudinal slits. Ovary superior, 1-celled; ovule placentation parietal.

Fruit: Capsules narrowly cylindrical; 3–11 cm long; 4–5(–6) mm in diameter; 2–valved; beaked. Seeds numerous; tuberculate.

Ploidy: 2n = 20; 30; 32; 34; 36

Habitat: Naturalized in dry areas; especially along roadsides and in pastures.

Elevation Range: Low elevations.
